Meowant Self-Cleaning Litter Box Review: Which Model Will Your Cat Actually Use?

Meowant promises less scooping, better odor control and useful health tracking at a lower price than many premium robot litter boxes. I looked beyond the marketing at independent tests, long-term owners, complaints and what cats themselves seem to tolerate.

We spend real money on cat food, toys, scratching posts and cozy beds, and then put a plastic tray of gravel in the corner and scoop it by hand twice a day. No wonder automatic litter boxes are tempting. Your cat does its business, the machine sorts out the waste, and you empty a drawer every few days instead of hunting for clumps with a plastic shovel.

Meowant has built its name on making that idea much cheaper than some of the best-known robotic litter boxes. I went through independent tests, owner reviews, Reddit threads, warranty complaints and the brand’s newest models. My conclusion is that the question isn’t “Will it save me from scooping?” It usually does. The better question is: which Meowant, if any, will my cat be happy using?

The lineup

Meowant says it was founded in 2013 and sells pet products in the U.S., UK and Canada, from feeders and water fountains to air purifiers and a GPS dog fence. But the self-cleaning litter boxes are what made the brand, and they aren’t just different sizes of one machine:

  • SC01: compact, with a very low entrance.
  • SC02: more room inside.
  • SC09: a very large enclosed model, built for cats up to 30 lb.
  • SC10: open on top, with more headroom and a better view for the cat.
  • SC03: an open tray with a dual-rake system, no rotating globe.

Start with the cat, not the app

You might love the Wi-Fi, weight charts and cleaning schedules. Your cat may just think, I don’t like that hole. Veterinary guidance says the same thing: size, mobility and whether a cat prefers an open or enclosed toilet matter as much as the technology. Some cats feel safest in a big open box where they can see around them. Others are perfectly happy inside a cover.

Large or long-bodied cats. The SC09 has a claimed 106-liter interior and handles cats from 3.3 to 30 lb, a far better bet for a Maine Coon than the compact SC01. But big on paper isn’t always comfortable, and some cats hate turning around inside an enclosed globe. For them, the SC10 is more interesting: an open-top 72-liter litter area, an 11.9-liter waste drawer and plenty of headroom.

Older cats or cats with mobility problems. The SC01’s entrance is only about 4.8 inches high, which Cats.com’s tester singled out as helpful for senior cats and short-legged breeds. It’s no guarantee, though. The tester’s own senior cat refused to use it. A feature that looks perfect on paper can still lose the vote to the cat.

Does it actually work?

Mostly yes, with an asterisk.

Cats.com tested the SC01 for several weeks and scored it 4.2 out of 5, with high marks for price and looks. Setup was easy, it ran very quietly, the app connected without trouble and the machine came apart reasonably well for cleaning. The weak spots: litter can collect between the drum and the base, the low entrance lets more litter scatter, the waste bin is small, the app sometimes misidentifies cats or weights, and some owners reported leaks and failures after a few months.

Owners split in a way that tells you a lot. One person used an SC01 for about two years with four cats and loved that the app logged visits and weight trends. A two-cat household emptied the waste compartment about every five days and noticed less smell than with a regular box. Others describe urine getting into seams, litter stuck to the inside, hard deep cleaning and faults showing up months in.

Much of that comes down to how each cat uses the box. A cat that walks to the middle, squats and buries neatly is every manufacturer’s dream. Some cats pee high, hug the edge, walk in without turning around, or dig like they’re building a tunnel. One SC09 owner with large male cats found that waste near the sides didn’t always reach the disposal opening, and the shallow litter depth struggled with big volumes of urine. Another owner called the SC09 a step up from their old Litter-Robot for a large cat, praising the space and easier cleaning. Neither is wrong. They just have different cats.

“Self-cleaning” isn’t “never clean”

A self-cleaning box ends routine scooping. It doesn’t end topping up litter, emptying waste bags, wiping the interior, cleaning sensors, clearing litter from seams or the occasional full wash. Vets say the same: even good automatic boxes need regular emptying, refills and deep cleaning.

For most people that’s still a big win. Five minutes every few days beats scooping every morning and evening. But if you expect to plug in a robot and never think about litter again, you’ll be disappointed.

The app is more useful than it looks

Compatible models log when the box was used, how long each visit lasted and the cat’s approximate weight, and they tell cats apart mostly by weight. It’s not perfect. Two cats of similar weight can confuse it, and so can adding litter. Still, trends matter. A cat who usually visits four times a day and suddenly goes twelve is something you want to know. So is an unexplained weight change. Treat it as an early warning, not a diagnosis, and call your vet if anything changes.

Safety comes first

An automatic litter box is a motorized machine your cat climbs inside, so I’d want safety design front and center. Cats.com recommends at least a weight sensor plus a motion or infrared sensor, with protection against mechanical obstruction as another safeguard. Meowant says its models combine weight, infrared and motor-protection sensors. The SC10 has an open top, six active sensors and motor-stall protection, and cleaning stops if a cat approaches or enters.

Respect the minimums: the SC01, SC02 and SC09 are for cats at least four months old and around 3 to 3.3 lb. Smaller kittens shouldn’t use automatic mode. One recent Reddit post raised concerns about obstruction detection on a large Meowant model. It’s a single report, not proof of a widespread problem, but when it’s about a cat’s safety, I wouldn’t brush it aside.

Introduce it slowly

Don’t pull the old box on delivery day and expect your cat to applaud the upgrade. Vets suggest leaving the new box unplugged or in manual mode at first, keeping the old one nearby and letting the cat get comfortable before automatic cycling starts. Meowant gives similar advice: use familiar litter, put the new box next to the old one and never force the cat inside. To a nervous cat, the new toilet just moved by itself.

What owners say

Meowant’s Trustpilot score is about 4.1 out of 5 from more than 5,000 reviews. Roughly 67% are five stars, and customers praise easy setup, quiet running, odor control and room for big cats. Keep in mind that Meowant actively invites reviews and pays for a Trustpilot subscription, so I’d read that number with some caution.

The downside is customer service. The Better Business Bureau gives Meowant an F, with 52 complaints in three years, 21 of them in the last 12 months, all listed as unanswered through BBB’s process. These are customer allegations, not proven findings, and a BBB grade isn’t a reliability test. Many complaints share a pattern, though: a fault appears, support asks for photos or videos, then replies slow down or the fix doesn’t satisfy the owner. Reddit users report similar trouble with replacement parts after the warranty ends. Plenty of Trustpilot customers say their support experience was fine, so this isn’t “no customer service.” It’s the biggest risk in the purchase, and worth knowing before you buy.

One thing helps: for litter boxes bought directly from Meowant.com on or after April 1, 2026, the warranty is two years. Amazon and TikTok Shop purchases get the standard one year. Keep the box and packaging for the first month and test everything while you can still send it back.

Which Meowant should you look at first?

Your catStart with
Small or medium, limited floor spaceSC01 or SC02
Senior or mobility-limitedSC01 (lower entrance)
Large, fine with covered boxesSC09
Large or long, dislikes enclosed boxesSC10
Prefers a conventional open traySC03

Don’t choose from a table alone. Watch your cat first. Does she pee against the side? Does he stand upright? Does she refuse covered boxes? Does he have arthritis? Does she throw litter everywhere? Those answers are worth more than another hour of reading spec sheets.

The good and the not-so-good

What I like: far less daily scooping, several designs for different cats, options for large cats, open-top alternatives in the SC10 and SC03, quiet operation, useful weight and bathroom trends, lower prices than some premium rivals, safety sensors on current models, a two-year warranty on eligible direct purchases and a 30-day return period.

What to think about: it still needs real cleaning, older models have recurring leak reports, some cats simply dislike enclosed robot boxes, newer models have less long-term track record, the app can confuse cats of similar weight, some owners report mechanical failures, support has drawn real complaints, and the minimum age and weight rules matter.

So, would I buy one?

Possibly, but not because I hate scooping. Every cat owner hates scooping. I’d buy one after watching my cat’s habits and finding a model that fits them.

For the right cat, it’s a real upgrade. The box stays cleaner between visits, odors go away sooner, and you don’t come home from a long day to a litter box full of surprises. People with bad backs or limited mobility skip the constant bending. The app gives you a window into how often your cat is using the toilet.

But the cat comes first. If yours hates enclosed spaces, don’t buy the enclosed model for its specs. If your senior cat struggles to climb, don’t make them. If your cat keeps peeing outside the entrance, don’t blame the cat for not understanding the engineering. And if the machine causes more stress than it removes, put the old litter box back.

The point of a self-cleaning litter box isn’t to prove we can automate one more chore. It’s to keep their bathroom clean and make our lives a little easier. In that order.
